Religious Order: Toys

I've recently started looking at Woot. Woot sells one thing a day. That's it, just one thing. If it sells out, then that's it for the day.

But, occasionally, they'll have what's called a woot-off. During a woot-off, when one thing sells out, another immediately replaces it. There was a woot-off a couple weeks ago. And, since I work from home now, I kept tabs on it and ended up buying some stuff.

The first thing I picked up was a cheap-ass 4 gig SD card. Chances were slim that it would work in any of our electronics. And, sure enough, it didn't. Oddly, I could read and write to it via my Sansa MP3 player, but the player itself couldn't read anything off the card. I mainly bought it because we're planning on buying a new digicam soon. (I fell down while carrying the old one and it has trouble focusing now.) And it'll be nice to have a big fat card to go with it. Plus, it was only $20.

The second thing was a trio of LeakFrogs. These are water leak detectors. Basically, they have a pair of metal contacts. Get 'em wet and they make a loud beep. We had a near miss recently. We were going to go shopping and out to eat one night. While my wife drove home to come pick me up, I started putting on my shoes. While doing so, I heard a very quiet drip. Then another. Then another. So I investigated. The water heater had sprung a leak! Luckily, only a small pool had formed. So we drained the heater and plumbers came out the next day to replace it with a shiny new one. But, if I hadn't heard that drip, we would have come back 2 hours later to find quite a mess. So now there's a LeakFrog next to the new water heater, as well as by the washing machine. And the third is under the kitchen sink. Cheap insurance at $8 a pop.

The third buy was a set of 4 USB cables. Just plain old cables. Well, the ends light up, each one a different color. Just handy things to have. $7 for all four.

Purchase number four was a mini stereo system. It's really cheap stuff, but it has a few tricks up its sleeve. It can play MP3s off of CD-Rs. And it can play them off of a USB drive. And off of an SD card. (But not off of the 4 gig SD card I bought above.) And it was just $40. On the bad side, its randomize function just doesn't work. And it can't show ID3 tag info. But that's fine. I use it to provide music when I'm working in the garage or some other place where I don't want to keep a computer.

The last item I bought during the woot-off was a collection of 3 screaming flying monkeys. They have rubber arms. You fling them through the air, using them like a slingshot, and they make loud monkey noises along the way. Sweet! Just $2 each! Oh, and they have little capes. One was given to Rogoliver. One is destined for a certain niece and nephew. And the third is mine, all mine!

And that finished off the woot-off. A couple days later, they had a $90 VHS-to-DVD deck. I had to pick it up. It's been handy for copying old tapes to DVD. It can also record directly from the TV signal to DVD.

So, overall, I picked up some fun stuff. But you need to be careful. It's a little like eBay, where you find yourself buying crap you don't need, just because it seems cool at the time.
